The Game Story:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont junior Branden Moore (Beverly Hills, Mich.) scored a career high four goals to lead a high scoring offensive attack for the Catamounts in a 14-4 victory over St. Michael’s. Senior captain Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) added two goals and three assists for five points as Vermont improved to 2-1 on the season.

After one period the game was tied 1-1 but Vermont scored five second period goals to take a 6-2 advantage at halftime. UVM junior Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) scored the Catamounts’ lone goal in the first period on the first of two assists in the game by senior captain Austin Humphries (Salem, Va.).

In the second period, Moore scored twice and Layton added his second score of the game. Maher and junior Clayton Phillips-Dorsett (Manchester, Vt.) also added goals for the Catamounts.

Vermont took full control of the contest in the second half outscoring the Purple Knights 8-2. Junior Adam Kornuth (Denver, Colo.) picked up a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes and Moore added two scores. Maher, sophomore Dan Zwirko (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Jamie Kirk (Orangeville, Ontario) each had one goal in the second half as well.

Freshman Alex Young (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched the first score of his career in the fourth period.

Senior Matt Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had 10 ground balls to lead the Catamounts. Senior captain Brent Wilson (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had two ground balls and anchored a Vermont defense that allowed St. Michael’s to score just one goal in each quarter.

Sophomore Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J.) made his first career start in goal for the Catamounts and made five saves for his first ever win. Junior Daryl Swarts (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished up the fourth quarter in goal and made four stops.

GAME NOTES … Vermont leads the all-time series 13-0 against the Purple Knights … The win marked the first ever for the Catamounts at Moulton Winder Field … Mike Maher leads the team in points so far this year with seven goals and eight assists for 15 points … Jamie Kirk had three assists in the game.
