Villanova vs. Colgate

The Game Story:
VILLANOVA, PA. ----- The Villanova men's lacrosse team snapped its three-game losing streak on Saturday, March 23, with a 14-6 victory over the visiting Colgate Raiders. Senior Randall Calvert (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) and sophomore Dave Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, N.J./ Delbarton) each scored four goals apiece as the Wildcats improve to 2-3 on the year. With the loss Colgate falls to 3-3 overall.

Villanova dominated all aspects of the game and the Wildcat defense managed to hold the Raiders scoreless in the second and fourth quarters. Villanova goalie Dan Biser (Baltimore, Md./ Boys' Latin) made four saves in 60 minutes earning his second collegiate victory.

After Colgate scored the first goal of the game less than five minutes into the contest, Villanova rallied with three goals in a four minute span to capture a 3-1 lead with 2:03 left to play in the opening quarter. Calvert scored his first goal of the afternoon and first of the season at the 6:06 mark to even the score, 1-1. Cacciabeve continued the run with his first two goals of the afternoon. Senior Mike Holloway (Malvern, Pa./ Malvern Prep) and sophomore Matt Lucas (Fairfax, Va./ Pius VI) assisted on the two goals.

Colgate cut the Wildcats lead to 3-2 ten second after Cacciabeve's second goal when sophomore Andrew Houston (Short Hills, N.J.) found the back of the cage.

Villanova went on to outscore Colgate 4-0 in the second quarter with goals from Calvert, Holloway, Dan Fanelli (Wantagh, N.Y./ Wantagh), and Cacciabeve to gain a 7-2 advantage at intermission.

Colgate staged a rally in the third quarter cutting the lead to 9-6 with 4:23 left to play in the quarter. During the stretch, Raiders junior Nick Gerken (Wilton, Conn.) tallied two goals.

The Wildcats refused to be denied and scored the final six goals of the game to cruise to the 14-6 victory. Sophomore Scott MacMullan (Arnold, Md./ Severn School) netted his second goal of the season with just 0:22 left to play to give Villanova a 10-6 lead entering the final quarter.

Calvert led the Wildcats charge in the fourth quarter scoring two of his four goals. Lucas and Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa./ Downingtown) tallied the other two scores for Villanova. Cacciabeve added an assist in the quarter to cap his five-point day, a career-high.

Villanova returns to action on Saturday, March 30, when they travel to Fairfield, Conn., for a Colonial Athletic Association match-up with Sacred Heart. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
