|Villanova, Pa. - Behind a quick start and tremendous ball control the Villanova men's lacrosse team pummeled visiting Delaware, 12-6, on April 26. The Wildcats in one span ran off seven consecutive goals and the Blue Hens could not answer. The win brings Villanova's record to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Wildcats Chris Kramer (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) got on the board first at the 10:35 mark of the first quarter with a blast past Delaware goalie Chris Collins. Two unassisted goals by Matt Starker (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Richie Kratz (Succasunna, N.J./Delbarton) followed shortly after as Villanova's lead grew to 3-0.
Delaware answered back with 7:29 remaining in the first with a goal from Xander Ritz. Matt Alrich added two straight goals and Bob Meunier added another for the Hens bringing the score to 4-4 with 9:04 left in the second frame. Villanova responded with eight consecutive goals the last of which came at the start of the fourth and Delaware could only manage two goals in response.
Villanova was led by Marc Creegan (West Babylon, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who scored four goals and assisted on two others. Making the most of Senior Night was Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown) who distributed the ball with ease en route to five assists. Brendan O'Donnell (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Moutain Lakes) scored three goals, Kramer and Kratz had two, and Starker added one in the victory. Goalkeeper Joseph Canuso (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) was tough all night and recorded nine saves on 23 shots attempted by Delaware.
The 'Cats regular season is now complete and they head to the CAA tournament in hopes of a bid to the NCAA tournament. Villanova squares off against Hofstra on April 30 in the CAA semifinals. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hofstra. Earlier this season Villanova fell to the Pride 9-5 and the Wildcats will look to retaliate and move on to the CAA finals to be held on May 3.
