|The Game Story:|
|VILLANOVA, PA. ----- On Saturday, March 9, the Villanova men's lacrosse team fell to
the Drexel Dragons, 9-8, in double overtime at Villanova Stadium. Sophomore Dave
Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, N.J./ Delbarton) tallied, a career-high, four points in the
loss as the Wildcats fall to 1-2 on the year, 0-2 in CAA action. The Dragons improve to
2-2 overall, 1-0 in the CAA, as they spoiled Villanova's home opener.
Villanova sophomore Matt Lucas (Fairfax, Va./Pius VI) put the Wildcats ahead, 8-7, with 56 seconds remaining, but Drexel refused to lose. Dragons junior Jason Kilpatrick (Ridley, Pa.) tallied his third goal of the afternoon with only 0:07 remaining in regulation to force overtime play.
The two teams played a scoreless first overtime with Drexel controlling the tempo and with 3:26 remaining in the second overtime period, the Dragons leading scorer Sean Moloney (Mohopac, N.Y.) scored his seventh goal of the season, as Drexel emerged victorious, 9-8, in double-overtime. In a first half that featured three ties and two lead changes, the Wildcats and Dragons entered intermission tied at 4-4.
Villanova sophomore Richie Kratz (Succasunna, N.J./ Delbarton) put the Wildcats on the board 2:22 into the contest with his first goal of the season. Drexel responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore Mark Williamson (Corning, N.Y.) and junior Joe Fiore (St. James, N.Y.) to put the Dragons ahead 2-1.
Villanova regained the lead with three unanswered goals to go ahead, 4-2, early in the second quarter. Cacciabeve accounted for two of the three goals during the stretch, with freshman Dan Fanelli (Wantagh, N.Y./ Wantagh) scoring the other goal. Drexel rallied to score two goals before the break knotting the score at four goals apiece before the break.
In the third quarter the Wildcats came out and scored two goals in the opening five minutes of the half. Senior Mike Holloway (Malvern, Pa./ Malvern Prep) tallied his fifth goal of the season and extended his streak to eight straight games with at least one goal. With 10:35 remaining in the third quarter, Cacciabeve connected with freshman Marc Creegan (West Babylon, N.Y./ St. Anthony's) in front of the cage and Creegan found the back of the net putting Villanova ahead, 6-4. The Wildcats unleashed 14 shots in the third quarter, but only managed to beat Drexel goalkeeper, Jordie Olivella twice.
A pesky Drexel offense fought back again and trimmed the 'Cats lead to one goal, 6-5, on Jarrett Mizzi's (Floral Park, Md.) second goal of the afternoon.
Villanova capitalized on an extra-man opportunity early in the fourth quarter with junior Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa./ Downingtown) scoring his third goal of the season on an assist from Cacciabeve. Once again the Wildcats captured a two-goal lead, 7-5, but Drexel fought back and outscored Villanova 4-1 over the closing minutes to claim the double-overtime victory. Drexel has won two straight against the 'Cats with each as a one goal victory.
The Wildcats will pack their bags and head to Bethlehem, Pa., for a non-conference match-up with Lehigh on Saturday, March 16, at 1:00 p.m.
