Villanova vs. Saint Joseph's
March 19, 2003
The Game Story:
Villanova, Pa. - Men's lacrosse played host to city rival St. Joseph's on March 19. The Wildcats improved their record to 4-1 on the season after defeating the Hawks 7-4 at Villanova Stadium. The game remained close until three Villanova goals in the fourth quarter put the #18 'Cats up for good.

Dave Cacciabeve started Villanova's night off with a first quarter goal at the five minute mark. Brian Marks assisted on the play en route to three assists on the night. Following Cacciabeve's goal the Hawks answered with one of their own. The Villanova defense let St. Joe's Brian Mullan slip free and he found the back of the net for his only goal of the night. The teams traded goals the remainder of the first half and entered the break closer than Villanova anticipated at 2-2.

The third frame went much the same as the first two. The Wildcat's Matt Starker scored his second unassisted goal of the night as Villanova knotted the score at three all to get the 'Cats rolling in the third period. A Richie Kratz goal only a minute after Starker's put the Wildcats up for good. A Matt Mueller score for the Hawks put the visitors in a frenzy to enter the fourth period but #18 Villanova was just too much.

Marc Creegan tallied three goals in the final period to take Villanova to victory. The Wildcats in essence were able to control the ball the entire period and the Wildcats defense made the necessary stops to hold on to the victory, 7-4.

Villanova goalkeeper Joseph Canuso continued to play well with seven clutch saves in the game. Creegan finished with three goals, Marks with three assists, and Matt Starker added two goals of his own. Rounding out the Wildcat scoring was Chris Kramer and Brendan O'Donnell with an assist each, and Richie Kratz with one goal.

Up next for Villanova is a trip to Colgate on March 23. The 'Cats look for a repeat of last years contest when Villanova handed the Raiders a 14-6 loss. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. this Sunday.
