|LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Canisius lacrosse team scored the first four goals of
the game in defeating VMI at Patchin Field on Sunday afternoon by a score of
13-7. The game was the season-opener for both teams.
The Golden Griffins took the early four-goal lead behind two goals from attackmen Chris Tocin and Greg Campbell. Three of the first four goals came on extra-man opportunities. VMI closed the gap to 5-2 at the end of the first quarter with goals from sophomore midfielder Brian Niven (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) and senior midfielder Ben Midura (Penfield, N.Y./ Penfield).
Canisius extended its lead to four (7-3) at the half with second quarter goals from junior midfielder Mark Miyashita and sophomore midfielder Justin Masley.
After falling behind, 9-3 in the third quarter, the Keydets responded by scoring the final four goals of the quarter and cutting the lead to two (9-7). The charge was led by Midura, who scored two goals in the last 6:07 in the period.
The Golden Griffins outscored VMI in the fourth quarter, 4-0 to seal their first win of the year.
Canisius was led in scoring by Tocin, who had four goals and an assist on the day. Niven paced the Keydet effort with three goals and an assist.
VMI junior goalkeeper Brian Ward (Novi, Mich./ Novi) made 12 saves on the afternoon. Canisius's junior Seth Vath made eight stops
VMI will play at Ohio State on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 face-off set. Canisius next play on March 12 at Cornell. Face-off for that game will be at 5 p.m.
