| LEXINGTON, Va. -- Providence senior attackman Jon Meehan (Peabody,
Mass./St. John's Prep) scored off an assist from junior attackman David
Krasnica (Mendham, N.J./Delbarton) with eight seconds remaining to lift
the Friars to a 6-5 win over VMI in MAAC men's lacrosse action on
Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
Providence (3-5, 3-0) did not trail in the contest until VMI freshman attackman Will Collier (Centreville, Va./Woodberry Forest) scored off an assist by freshman attackman Robert Trimble (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) with 6:54 remaining in the game for a 5-4 Keydet advantage. The Friars knotted the score at 5-5 just 1:58 later as sophomore midfielder Richard Knightly (Windsor, Mass./St. Joseph Central) scored unassisted, setting the stage for Meehan's game-winner. VMI was led by junior attackman Leo McInerney's (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) two goals on the afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Gabe McCaig (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) notched a pair of assists, while Trimble recorded one goal and one assist. Senior Brian Ward (Novi, Mich./Novi) posted nine saves in goal for the Keydets. Providence was paced by Meehan and junior midfielder Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), who each scored two goals. Sophomore Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) registered 14 saves between the pipes. VMI returns to action next Saturday as it travels to St. Joseph's for a 2:00 pm MAAC contest. Providence will next compete on Wednesday as it travels to Holy Cross for a 7:00 pm game. |
