April 6, 2005
The Game Story:
LEXINGTON, Va. - Despite taking an early lead and holding the statistical edge in shots, ground balls, face-offs, and man-up goals, the VM menís lacrosse team was dealt an 11-9 loss by Bellarmine earlier Wednesday afternoon at Patchin Field. The Keydets, who never trailed in the game until the fourth quarter, fell to 4-4 overall with their second loss in their last three games while Bellarmine improved to 8-1 overall with the non-conference victory.

The Knights were led by junior attackman Garrett Kikot (Toronto, Ont./Hartford) who tallied six points on a team-high four goals and two assists. Freshman midfielder Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ont./Trinity-Pawling) added five points on three goals and two assists for Bellarmine.

After rallying throughout the game, Gardner gave the Knights their first lead of the game by scoring a man-up goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Ray Finnegan (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) to break a 9-9 tie. It was the third and final tie of the game and the goal put Bellarmine in front 10-9. Less than one minute later, Finnegan gave the Knights a two-goal cushion scoring unassisted for the final margin with 8:21 left to play.

VMI would have their opportunities the rest of the way but ultimately would fall short, recording only seven of its 42 shots in the fourth quarter when it also went 0-for-1 on man-up goals.

ďWe got into a little disruptive flow because we didnít finish our opportunities,Ē VMI coach Doug Bartlett said. ďIt was a hard loss.Ē

The Keydets outshot Bellarmine 42-27, had a 35-27 edge in ground balls, won 18 of the gameís 24 faceoffs, and went 5-for-8 in man-up opportunities while Bellarmine was just 1-for-3.

Early on the Keydets were rolling as they took a 1-0 lead on a man-up goal by senior midfielder Erik Rohrmann (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) with the assist coming from freshman attackman Kevin Hill (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side). Bellarmine answered a short time later when Gardner combined with Kikot who found the back of the net with 7:11 left in the opening quarter. The Keydets then scored five straight goals to open up a 6-1 lead with four of them coming in the first. Two of those four were man-up goals supplied by Rohrmann while junior attackman Will Collier (Centreville, Va./Woodberry Forest) opened the second quarter with a goal off an assist from junior attackman Robert Trimble (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) to complete the 5-0 surge.

The Knights battled back by scoring the next five goals, three of which came in the second quarter to pull them within 6-4 at the half. Bellarmineís surge continued in the third quarter with goals by Kikot and Gardner with Gardnerís tally forcing a 6-6 tie with 12:07 left in the period.

The Keydets responded lightning-quick just 14 seconds later to regain a 7-6 lead when Robert Trimble scored off an assist from junior midfielder David Trimble (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton). VMI added to itsí lead just 1:31 later when senior attackman Leo McInerney (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus), VMIís current season leader in points (30) and goals (22), scored his only goal of the day with a man-up tally with 10:22 left in the period for an 8-6 Keydet lead.

The Knights kept coming back and would score five of the gameís last six goals. After the two teams split the next goals, VMI led 9-7 only to have Bellarmine end the game with a 4-0 run. Freshman attackman Shawn Evans (Peterborough,

Ont./St. Peterís) scored unassisted with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter to pull the Knights within 9-8 at the end of three periods.

The Knights kept pushing on attack in the fourth quarter and forced a 9-9 tie with 12:38 left to play when junior midfielder Cameron Adams (Glengowrie, Australia/Catonsville CC) scored off an assist from Kikot. Gardnerís man-up goal and Finneganís unassisted tally finished the run as Bellarmine put the finishing touches on itsí rally.

Rohrmann led VMI with three goals while Robert Trimble and Hill each had a pair of assists for the Keydets. VMI also got a solid performance from junior goalkeeper Dan Frank (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) who finished with 10 saves including four in the fourth quarter helping to keep VMI in the game while supporting itsí attempted rally from a two-goal deficit.

The Keydets return to action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm at Patchin Field. A short ceremony recognizing the seven VMI seniors will be part of the pre-game itinerary.
