The Game Story:
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Robert Morris Colonials posted nine goals in the second period and raced out to a 14-4 halftime lead en route to a 19-8 win over the VMI Keydets Saturday afternoon, in a non-conference lacrosse contest played at Foster Stadium in Lexington, Va.

The visiting Colonials (3-0) came in with the top-scoring offense in Division I, and saw Kiel Matisz post five goals and Corbyn Tao-Brambleby add three in Saturday’s win. Robert Morris outshot the Keydets, 52-32, including 16-7 in the decisive second quarter. RMU closed the half by scoring eight of the final nine goals, including the last five.

The Keydets were led by Colin Bosse’s three goals, and despite RMU’s scoring output, Kelly McMinn had 15 saves in goal. Brett Leonard had three points, while Tim Moran and Jacob Weimer each added two in the setback.

VMI jumped on the scoreboard first Saturday, as McMinn stopped two shots on the Colonials' first possession. Off the ensuing clear, Drew Leonard scored on a shot from netminder Dillon Pope’s left, putting the Keydets up 1-0 just 1:33 in to the contest. RMU quickly fired back, as they started a four-goal run at the 12:50 mark. By the time the run ended at 8:32, the Colonials had a 4-1 edge that they would not relinquish.

Bosse cut the margin to 4-2 with a score at 1:29, but Matisz notched his second goal just 16 seconds later, making it 5-2 at the end of the opening period. The RMU midfielder would add a third marker just 18 seconds into the second quarter, increasing the visitors’ lead to 6-2.

The Keydets got back on the board two minutes later, when Brett Leonard scored off a Moran pass to make it 6-3, RMU. The play marked Moran’s 43rd career assist, tying him for 10th on the all-time VMI list. The helper also tied the senior midfielder for 10th on the program's all-time point list, but unfortunately, the Keydets would be outscored 8-1 the rest of the half, accounting for the halftime margin of 14-4. RMU was helped by 11 first half VMI turnovers, in addition to the Colonials’ strong 10 for 11 effort in first half clear attempts.

The pace of the game slowed dramatically in the third quarter, as the teams combined for just three goals during the frame. A man-up goal by Tao-Brambleby opened that scoring with 9:19 left in the period, but Bosse tallied goals at 6:51 and 4:58, both off assists from Leonard, to make the score 15-6 after three periods of play. Moran and Bobby Davis scored for the Keydets in the fourth, while the Colonials added four additional goals to account for the final margin.

12 different players scored for the visitors, as RMU moved to 3-0 on the season behind Pope’s 11 saves in his first start of the year. Despite the final score, the teams were equal in one stat, as both squads grabbed 29 ground balls. The Keydets were paced by Stephen Robarge, who had grabbed eight grounders on the day.

VMI lacrosse will return to action Tuesday, as the Keydets travel to Charlottesville to take on the #2 Virginia Cavaliers. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
