Vmi vs. Robert Morris
March 11, 2008
The Game Story:
Lexington, Va. – Senior Andrew Watt (Kitchener, Ontario / Grand River Collegiate) became the first Robert Morris University men’s lacrosse player to reach 100 points in a career as the Colonials posted a 15-4 victory over VMI this afternoon in Lexington, Va.

Watt, who was four points shy of the mark entering today’s game, scored three goals and added an assist to hit the triple-digit milestone and help the Colonials (4-3) to their second victory over the Keydets in program history. The senior attacker accumulated the feat with 70 goals and 30 assists through 45 career games.

Sophomore Pat Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) led the offense with three goals and two assists and freshman Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) knocked in four goals for his second consecutive four-point game.

In a make-up game of last Saturday’s originally scheduled contest, the Colonials jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the beginning minutes of the first quarter and never looked back. Watt scored the opening tally on a fast-break opportunity thanks to an assist from senior Brendan Arthur (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) at 12:37 followed by back-to-back man-up goals by Smith and senior Michael Fleming (Sarnia, Ontario / St. Christopher) less than a minute apart.

Pittsburgh-native Dan Perestock brought the Keydets back into contention for the moment at 8:20, but a late goal by Watt to close out the quarter would put the Colonials back up by three heading into the second.

RMU took full control in the second stanza using unassisted goals by freshmen Rob Marasti (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) and Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) along with scores from Smith and Tao-Brambleby to build an 8-1 lead heading into halftime.

VMI found an offensive rhythm in the third, matching the Colonials in scoring, 2-2. Smith and Watt each added their third goals of the game in the frame.

After an exchange of goals to begin the fourth quarter, Robert Morris put the cherry on top with a four-goal run in the final 10 minutes. Tao-Brambleby netted the natural hat-trick to push the score to 14-4 while senior Alex Sewell (Mt. Airy, Md. / Linganore) added the 15th goal of the game to give the Colonials their program-best fourth victory of the season.

Sophomore Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) picked up the win in goal with 12 saves over 56:06 worth of action. Senior John Kennedy (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) wrapped up the final minutes facing no shots.

Robert Morris held the advantage in shots, 42-19, while winning the ground ball battle, 36-34.

The Colonials return home this week to host #20 Ohio State on Saturday, March 15 for a 1:00 p.m. contest at Joe Walton Stadium.
