Wagner vs. Lafayette

The Game Story:
(March 29; SI, NY) The Wagner College men’s lacrosse team edged the visiting Lafayette College Leopards, 8-7 in overtime this afternoon. Wagner improves to 1-6 on the season and snaps a four-game losing streak to the Leopards. Lafayette falls to 0-8.

Wagner junior Tom Marchetti (Washington, D.C.) tallied the game-winner by ripping an unassisted goal past Lafayette goalie Chris Rosa (West Islip, NY) with just under one minute gone by in OT.

Seahawk junior Kevin Zulauf (Lincoln Park, NJ) tallied a game-high three goals to go along with an assist for his third hat trick of the season. Sophomore Mike Sciamanna (Beverly, MA), Mike Coleman (Boonton, NJ) and Marchetti each recorded a goal and an assist for the winners. Wagner junior Chris Sochacki (Brant Beach, NJ) made 13 saves in goal, including two key saves with the game tied, one near the end of regulation and one in OT.

Lafayette was led by Andrew Horton (Wilton, CT) who tallied two goals to go along with an assist. Jon Paulson (Flemington, NJ) and recorded a goal and an assist for the Leopards. Rosa made five saves on the afternoon.

In the back and forth contest, Wagner took a 2-0 lead a little over three minutes into the game only to see Lafayette to the game at 2-2 on Horton’s first goal with 2:42 to go in the opening period. Zulauf, Sciamanna and Josh Hamilton (Millersville, MD) scored the game’s next three goals before Lafayette scored an even-strength goal with 2:42 to go in the second period as Wagner took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

Lafayette’s Leo Stinson (Princeton, NJ) and Paulson scored goals in the third period as the Leopards tied the game at 5-5 after three quarters.

Wagner then took a 7-5 advantage after the first five minutes of the final period but Lafayette tied the game at 7-7 with just seven seconds remaining in regulation on a goal by Ryan Spitz (Princeton Junction, NJ).

Lafayette won the OT faceoff before Sochacki made a nice save for Wagner. After Wagner cleared the ball successfully, Marchetti started behind the net, came around the left side of the goal and sliced the game winner into the upper left hand corner.

Wagner will be in action again on Sunday, April 3 when they host VMI in a game that begins at noon.
