Wagner vs. Manhattan
April 15, 2009
The Game Story:
Staten Island, NY – Wagner received a three-goal outing from freshman attack Mike Hurley (Bellerica, MA/ Bellerica) and a career-high 20-save performance from freshman goalie Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) but it was not enough as Manhattan College held on for a 9-7 win.

Manhattan had the better of the play early. After Hurley gave Wagner a 1-0 lead 4:40 into the game, the Jaspers reeled off the next five goals and took a 6-2 halftime lead. When Manhattan scored the first two goals of the second half, it appeared that the Jaspers were in control. The Seahawks, however, responded with a four-goal run to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Senior attack Jeff Policicchio (Novi. MI) started and ended the four-goal run with a pair of goals that were sandwiched around a pair of Hurley tallies. Policicchio’s second goal midway through the fourth quarter off an assist by junior midfielder Sean travis (Calverton, NY/ Riverhead) made it an 8-6 game. After a Manhattan goal made it 9-6, senior midfielder Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) rocketed home a goal from 20 yards out with 3:45 to go that made it 9-7 but the Jaspers were able to successfully hang on for the win.

Manhattan out-shot Wagner 44-28, held a 38-28 edge in ground balls while winning 12-of-19 face-offs.

The Jaspers used a balanced offensive formula with James Synowiez, Sal Perrotto and Justin Jensen scoring two goals apiece. Goalie John Geagan recorded nine saves for Manhattan.

In addition to Hurley’s three goals, Policicchio added two goals for the Seahawks.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-12 on the season, 0-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the Jaspers improved to 7-6 overall, 3-2 in conference play.
