|The Game Story:|
| VESTAL, N.Y.-- Freshman attack Chris Mulheron (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and junior attack Rob Williams (Fulton, N.Y.) each scored three goals, leading Binghamton (7-6) to an 11-6 win over Drexel (5-8) in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup on Tuesday afternoon at the East Gym Complex. The Bearcats scored the last nine goals to capture their final home game of the season.|
"Our defense got more aggressive as the game went on and we had a great second half," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "This is a great win for us because Drexel is a good team."
Mulheron, who now leads the Bearcats with 32 points, also added an assist. Freshman attack Jake Boyce (Pittsford, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals, giving him a team-best 21 for the season, while sophomore midfielder Stephen Smith (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist. Junior midfielder Jeff Santucci (Cicero, N.Y.) tallied a pair of assists.
With time running down in the first half, the Bearcats trailed 6-2. Jeff Pfeffer had already recorded a hat trick for the visiting Dragons and the Bearcats had gone nearly 26 minutes without find the back of the net. It was then, however, that Mulheron took a pass from Smith and scored with just 35 seconds remaining.
"The goal by Mulheron at the end of the first half was huge," Stephenson said. "(Smith) did a great job setting him up."
In the third quarter, the Bearcats erupted for five unaswered goals to take an 8-6 lead. After junior midfielder Matt McNamara (Oswego, N.Y.) scored just 1:06 into the third quarter, Mulheron took over. He assisted on Williams' first goal of the game at the 9:56 mark and scored the next two goals in a span of 33 seconds. The final goal of the quarter was scored by senior midfielder David Burpoe (Arlington, Va.) with 1:45 remaining.
In the fourth quarter, Williams scored two goals in the opening 26 seconds, extending the lead to 10-6. Nearly 13 scoreless minutes later, Boyce iced the game with an empty-net goal.
In the faceoff circle, freshman J.P. Wioncek (Beverly, Mass.) won 14 of the 21 draws and scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls. Between the pipes, senior goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.) recorded 14 saves.
The Bearcats close out their regular season at Albany on Saturday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Wioncek headed into the Drexel game ranked 16th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.572) and 15th in ground balls per game (5.08). He is the top-ranked freshman in both categories ... Boyce is the third player in Binghamton's five-year history to reach the 20-goal mark in a season. He has 11 goals in the Bearcats' last four games ... McKeown has averaged 12.3 saves in the Bearcats' last three games and has a 0.59 save percentage during that span.
