The Game Story:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team got on the board first with a goal from sophomore Andrew Portnoy (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) 49 seconds into the contest and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but gave up a 6-0 run from the 9:58 mark of the first quarter to the 1:50 mark of the second quarter and never recovered, falling to the Bellarmine Knights, 12-6, on Saturday (Feb. 16) at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Michigan got on the board first, as Portnoy scored the first goal of his career at the 14:11 mark of the first quarter on a roll from X.

Senior Thomas Paras (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) then ripped off a pair of scores to give U-M a 3-0 lead with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening period, marking the third time Michigan has ever jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Bellarmine then went on to string together a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 lead, holding Michigan scoreless in the second quarter. Freshman Peter Kraus (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) ended the drought with his first career score, at the 1:50 mark of the second quarter to bring the Wolverines within two scores at 6-4 before the half.

The two sides traded goals to begin the second stanza, as freshman Kyle Jackson (Sarnia, Ontario/The Hill Academy) scored on a bounce shot from 10 yards out at the 11:12 mark on a helper from classmate Mike Hernandez (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) to bring the score to 6-5. However, Bellarmine answered back a minute later to lead 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Knights then had their second extended run of the day in the fourth quarter, beginning with a man-down score nearly five minutes into the third, eventually leading to a 11-5 lead with 10:48 remaining.

Jackson added his second of the game at the 9:37 mark to cut the score to 11-6, BU scored the final marker of the contest with 1:13 left, bringing the game to the final score of 12-6.

Cameron Gardner had five scores for the Knights, while Dillon Ward had 18 saves.

Freshman Brad Lott (Louisille, Ky./Trinity) was 8-of-18 on faceoffs in his collegiate debut, while sophomore Will Meter (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Bloomfield Hills) and fifth-year senior longstick Austin Swaney (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) had four ground balls. Jackson and Paras led the team in shots with five apiece, while freshman goalie Gerald Logan (Sachem, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) made 17 saves.

The Wolverines will travel to historic Homewood Field on Saturday (Feb. 23) to take on the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, currently ranked fourth nationally. The matchup, slated to begin at 1 p.m., will be broadcast live via the ESPN3 platform.
