| March 18, Louisville, Ky.- The Bellarmine lacrosse team kept their perfect record intact this afternoon, dispatching of Wheeling Jesuit University, 22-9. The Knights (5-0) turned a tight first half match-up into a blowout by outscoring the Cardinals (1-2) 9-0 in the fourth period.|
Bellarmine scored the first two goals of the game on unassisted scores by Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ont.) and Garett Kikot (Toronto, Ont.), but Wheeling Jesuit came right back, scoring their first goal at the 10:30 mark. By the end of the period, BU led by just two, 4-2, and went into halftime up 7-4. Things got very physical right before the half, with WJU losing one player to injury and another to a penalty in the final ten seconds of the term. However, despite being down a man to start the third, the Cardinals scored first, cutting the margin to just two. Freshman Shawn Evans (Peterborough, Ont.) countered with his second goal of the game, but two penalties by Kikot allowed the Cardinals a man-advantage early in the third. They turned both opportunities into goals and with 12:49 left in the third, Bellarmine’s lead was just 8-7.
WJU, however, would never gain the lead and appeared to run out of energy late in the third as the Knight transition game took over. Bellarmine scored 11 times, including nine unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, in the final 20 minutes of the contest to turn the game into a rout. Second half scoring was highlighted by a behind the head goal from Ray Finnegan (Dublin, Ohio).
Kikot finished the game with an impressive 10 goals and three assists to pace the home team. Evans finished with five tallies and three assists, while Gardner scored four times and assisted on three. JC Hutchins (Westminster, Md.) was solid in goal, with nine saves.
Bellarmine plays at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian on Saturday, March 26th.
