| The Game Story: | |||||
| The Robert Morris University men’s lacrosse team was edged out by Butler, 8-7, at Joe Walton Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Colonials came back from a 5-1 first quarter deficit only to see the Bulldogs score the game’s final two goals to register the win. Robert Morris falls to 1-8 on the season while Butler sees their record improve to 3-6. Colonials sophomore goaltender John Kennedy (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) tied his career high with saves in net. Offensively, sophomore Andrew Watt (Kitchener, Ontario / Grand River Collegiate) led RMU with four points on three goals and an assist while freshman Brandon Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) tallied two goals. Butler had a balanced attack with seven players accounting for the team’s eight goals. Only Mike Hinker found the net twice while Doug Mathias and Pat Hurto chipped with a goal and an assist each. The Bulldogs found their offense early, scoring twice in the game’s first 1:26 on goals by Hurto and Hinker. Johnson scored his first of the game at 11:52, but Butler reeled off three straight goals to take a 5-1 lead on Ryan Carter’s goal with 1:30 left in the opening frame. Johnson scored his second of the game just 17 seconds later to send the game into the first break at 5-2. Johnson’s goal was the first of four straight for RMU, who cut the margin to 5-4 at halftime with man-up goals by Watt and freshman Lee Davis (Melbourne, Australia / Heathdale Christian College) in the second period. Watt’s second goal of the game, 4:35 into the second half, tied the game at 5-5. Butler’s Adam Wade responded with 3:49 left in the third, but senior Eric DeSalvatore (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa (Hudson Valley C.C.)) tied the game with another man-up goal with 1:35 showing. Watt gave Robert Morris their first and only lead of the game, 7-6, 1:27 into the fourth period with the team’s fourth man-up goal. Butler would have the last say, however, at Mathias scored on a Hurto assist with 6:53 remaining in the game and Jeremy Sieverts tallied the gamewinner with 4:49 remaining in regulation. Butler held the advantage in shots (33-23, ground balls (27-22), face-offs (10-8) and turnovers (20-26). RMU was 4-7 on man-up opportunities while the Bulldogs were 0-4. Butler goaltender Ryan Kaiser finished with five saves and seven goals against. Robert Morris continues non-conference action next Saturday, April 8, when they host Ohio State in a Noon game at Joe Walton Stadium. |
