|The Game Story:|
|Moon Township, Pa. Ė April 4, 2009 Ė The Robert Morris University Colonialsí hosted the Drexel Dragons in their first home CAA contest of the season and edged past the Dragons, 11-10, in a very competitive contest. The victory marked RMUís first league win since the programís beginning in 2005.|
The Colonials and the Dragons ended the first-half with the score knotted 3-3, but the Colonials came out strong in the second-half, scored the first two goals and led for the remainder of the game. The win improves the Colonials record to 1-2 in the CAA and 7-4 overall, while Drexel drops to 0-2 in league play and 4-6 overall.
The win was a solid team effort, as a total of nine Colonials tallied points in the contest and five players captured a pair of goals. Junior Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) led the way with two goals and one assist for three points. Sophomores Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) and Taylor Caparosa (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) and seniors Brandon Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) and Billy Conques (Fairfax, Va. / Paul VI) also added two goals each in the win. Freshman Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) was the top assist provider, as he handed out three helpers.
Robert Morris extended its streak of scoring first to eight games when Caparosa slid past the Dragon defense at 3:01 to give the Colonials the early 1-0 lead. Drexelís Adam Dennis evened up the score at 1-1 when he fired a shot into the top corner of the Colonial net with 8:34 left on the clock.
The Colonials quickly responded a minute later when Lee took a perfectly aimed shot that soared right below the crossbar of the Dragons net to take back the lead, 2-1. For the next seven minutes of the quarter, Robert Morris secured possession for the majority of the time, but was unable to find the net.
At 2:39 into the second quarter Conques increased RMUís lead to 3-1. When it looked like he was about to get tripped up, he weaved his way through Drexelís defenders and past Dragon goalie Mark Manos to tally his third goal of the season.
Before the end of the half Drexelís Greg Casey was able to find the net and Kevin Stockel capitalized on an extra-man advantage to knot the game 3-3 going into the second-half.
Within the first three minutes of the third quarter Johnson and senior Dan Kerch (Chesterfield, Mo. / DeSmet) each scored goals to regain the lead, 5-3. Drexelís Ryan West got the ball past junior goalie Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) with 11:04 left in the quarter to cut into the lead, but Robert Morris notched two more goals before the end of the third to set the score at 7-4 in the Colonials favor.
Once again, Robert Morris secured the first two points of the quarter when Johnson tallied a man-up goal and Smith found the back of the net to give Robert Morris its biggest lead of the day, 9-4.
Drexel made a run for it throughout the remainder of the fourth quarter, notching six goals to the Colonials two, but Robert Morris was able to hang on for the 11-10 win.
Barcia was a large factor in the Colonialsí win, as he made several clutch saves throughout the game. He finished the day with 11 saves, while Manos also put in a strong performance with 11 stops.
Drexel was 14-for-24 in the face-off circle, while Robert Morris was 10-for-24 and the Dragons went 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities, while the Colonials were successful on 1-of-3 chances.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, April 7 in Buffalo, N.Y. where they will take on Canisius at 3:00 p.m.
