|The Game Story:|
|Moon Township, Pa. Ė April 25, 2009 Ė The Robert Morris University Colonials concluded the 2009 season on a high note, as they edged past the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon during RMUís senior day contest at Joe Walton Stadium. |
The Colonials reached several milestones this season with the win over Sacred Heart. It marked the Colonials first win over the Pioneers in program history and gave the Colonials a 9-7 overall record, which marks the first time Robert Morris finished a season above .500. The Colonials also earned a 2-4 CAA record this year, which marks their first CAA wins since the programís start in 2005.
Junior Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) led the Colonials with five goals, while senior Dan Kerch (Chesterfield, Mo. / DeSmet) captured a pair of goals and assists in the win for four points. Sophomore Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) registered two goals and one assist and sophomores Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. /. Western Reserve Academy) and Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) each added one goal and one assist. Moore will head into the 2010 season on a 15 game point streak.
Junior goalie Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) notched his best game of the season with a career-high 23 saves. His save total also tied an RMU record for saves in a single game.
The Colonials quickly established a two goal lead when Kerch scored the first goal of the game 11 seconds in and then 15 seconds later Smith tallied his first goal of the day off an assist from senior Brandon Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster).
However, Sacred Heart responded shortly after when Tim Russo found the net at 1:25, which started a string of four Pioneer goals, giving them the 4-2 lead with 5:54 left in the quarter.
With 2:34 remaining on the clock Kerch sent the ball to Smith who fired it past Pioneer goalie Zack Frank to cut into Sacred Heartís lead 4-3. 33 seconds later Tao-Brambleby took advantage of an extra-man opportunity and connected to knot the score 4-4 going into the second quarter.
Robert Morris dominated the first five minutes of the second-half and scored three goals, giving the Colonials a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of play. Evan Morgan stepped up for the Pioneers at 6:09 and got one by Barcia on an extra-man opportunity, but Smith and Moore added a goal each for Robert Morris to bring the score to 9-5 going into the second half.
At 3:07 in the third quarter Moore increased RMUís lead to 10-5 when he found a pass from Tao-Brambleby and slipped through the Pioneer defense for the score.
In an effort to catch up to the Colonials, the Pioneers scored three goals within a three minute span to cut into RMUís lead 10-8. However, the rookie duo of Kyle Buchanan (Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) and Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) ended the Pioneer scoring streak when Matisz sent the ball to Buchanan to make the score with 4:48 left in the quarter.
However, Sacred Heart got its groove back and scored two more goals in the last 1:46 of play to come within one of the Colonials at 11-10.
Aaron Bottazzo (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) started of the fourth quarter with his only goal of the game at 1:23, which was followed by an extra-man goal by Smith at 4:06 to give RMU a three goal cushion.
In an effort to tie the game Timmy Katz scored two goals for Sacred Heart in the final 10 minutes of action, but Sacred Heart was never able to find the net a third time, giving RMU the 13-12 win.
Both teams were two-for-four on extra-man opportunities, but Sacred Heart dominated the face-off circle winning 19 of 29 face-offs.
The Colonials end the season with a 9-7 overall record and a 2-4 CAA mark.
