March 9, 2014
The Game Story:
Moon Township, Pa. Despite taking a one-goal lead into halftime, the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph's in its Northeast Conference (NEC) opener, 11-8, this afternoon. Robert Morris (1-3, 0-1 NEC) drops its second-straight game, both defeats coming to Philadelphia-based teams. Saint Joseph's (4-2, 2-0 NEC) extends its winning streak to three games and keeps its lead in the conference. Senior Sean Meagher (Chesterfield, Mo. / St. Louis University) paced the Colonials with a career-high two goals and an assist. Meagher opened up the scoring just 1:45 into the game off a pass from sophomore Eric Rankel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West), then scored RMU's lone second half goal off another feed from Rankel with three minutes left in the contest. The Colonials took a 2-0 lead six minutes after Meagher's tally as redshirt senior Taylor Graves (Carlsbad, Calif. / Carlsbad) ripped a shot for his first goal of the season. The Hawks answered with a goal from Michael Rastivo, but RMU bounced back with an unassisted tally from sophomore James Rahe (Aldergrove, British Columbia / W.J. Mouat) to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Saint Joseph's responded with two goals in a back-and-forth second quarter to tie the game. Sophomore Luke Laszkiewicz (Oshawa, Ontario / Westminster Prep) gave the Colonials back the lead midway through the frame with his sixth goal of the season, but the Hawks tied it up again with another tally from Rastivo. After freshman Cody Nass (Vancouver, British Columbia / Delta Secondary) found the back of the net with his third goal of the season, Saint Joseph's answered with two tallies to take its first lead of the game. However, with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, freshman JonPatrik Kealey (Ottawa, Ontario / South Carleton) and Rankel each fired shots past Hawks goaltender Dustin Keen to push RMU back on top before the break. Saint Joseph's tied it up once more early in the third quarter and took the lead for good with 2:15 remaining in the stanza. The Hawks scored four unanswered goals between the two second half frames, and five in total Meagher's second tally being the outliner. Senior Brian Bohn (Mars, Pa. / Seneca Valley) made his fourth straight start between the pipes for the Colonials, stopping seven of the 18 shots he faced. Robert Morris will spend this coming week in the Empire State as it takes on Siena and Hobart. The contest against the Saints will be on Wednesday, March 12 at 3:00 p.m., while the conference bout with the Statesmen is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, March 15.
