| The Robert Morris University men’s lacrosse team dropped their fifth straight game Saturday afternoon, this one by an 11-8 count to Villanova in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at Joe Walton Stadium. The Colonials were led by freshman Frank Keel (Fort Defiance, Va. / James W. Robinson) with three goals as Robert Morris falls to 1-5 on the year and 0-2 in the CAA. Matt Starker led all scorers with six points on a game-high five goals and one assist for Villanova. Tim Langan, Jr., and Chris MacDonald each collected two goals and an assist to help the Wildcats improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Villanova Midfielder Chris Colliniates won 19-of-22 faceoffs. A low-scoring first period saw Villanova take the lead on a Chris Mercer goal 4:44 into the game. Colonials freshman Truett Valentine (Alexandria, Va. / James W. Robinson) tied the game with 5:03 left in the opening period. The Wildcats took control in the second period, holding the Colonials scoreless while taking a 5-1 lead into halftime. Starker, Langan, Jr., had the periods first two goals before MacDonald scored a pair just 20 seconds apart. Robert Morris cut into that lead early in the third period. Freshman Lee Davis (Melbourne, Austrailia / Heathdale Christian College) scored a man-up goal 1:02 into the frame followed by Keel’s first of the afternoon with 10:09 left in the period. Paul Genovese made it a 6-3 game with 9:43 showing before Colonials sophomore Mike Fleming (Sarnia, Ontario / St. Christopher) and freshman Brandon Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) scored goals to make it a one-goal game, 6-5, with 5:54 left in the period. Villanova responded with the game’s next two goals, just 13 seconds apart Starker. Keel stopped the Wildcats run, but Starker scored in a man-down situation with just 39 seconds left in the period to give Villanova a 9-6 lead at the break. Senior Eric DeSalvatore (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa (Hudson Valley CC)) and Keel scored for RMU in the fourth period while Langan, Jr., and Starker had goals for Villanova. Sophomore netminder Jason Dockum (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) had 11 saves and 11 goals against for Robert Morris while Joe Canuso had six saves and eight goals against. The Wildcats owned a 37-21 advantage in shots while committing more turnovers, 18, compared to Robert Morris (14). The Colonials converted just once on five man-up chances while the Wildcats went 1-2. |
