Mercer vs. Wagner

The Game Story:
Macon, GA - The Wagner College men’s lacrosse team opened a 7-3 lead midway through the first half before Mercer scored the next three goals to draw to within 7-6 at intermission and the Bears went on to post a 14-11 victory.

Junior attackman Sam Morrissey (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Central) led the Seahawks with four points on three goals and one assist. Senior attackman Mike Hurley (Billerica, MA/ Billerica) also totaled four points on two goals and two assists. Wagner had three other players record two goals each in junior midfielders Nick DePhillips (Glen Ridge, NJ/ Glen Ridge) and Colin O’Rourke (Worcester, MA/ St. John’s Shrewsbury) along with freshman midfielder Cory Santor (Glastonbury, CT/ Glastonbury).

Wagner jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Santor and Hurley en route to seizing a 4-1 following goals by Hurley and O’Rourke. After the Bears countered with a pair of goals to make it 4-3, the Seahawks went on a three-goal spree over a 4:20 stretch in opening the 7-4 lead. A DePhillips unassisted goal with 11:00 to play was followed by consecutive goals by Morrissey at 7:51 and 6:40.

Mercer then closed the half with goals by Nate Link, Eoin Collins and Zack Ward to make it a 7-6 game at halftime. DePhillips opened the second-half scoring to make it 8-6 before three consecutive Mercer goals put the Bears on top for the first time at 9-8. O’Rourke answered with an unassisted goal with 59 seconds left in the half to tie it at 9-9. Wagner then took its final lead of the game on a Morrissey goal off an assist by senior midfielder William Hedges (Shoreham, NY/ Longwood) with one second left in the quarter to give the Seahawks a 10-9 lead entering the fourth.

The Bears opened the final stanza with three consecutive goals to make it 12-10 before Santor cut it to 12-11 with 4:21 left. Mercer then put the game away with goals by Ward at 2:59, followed by a Jay DeBole with 31 seconds left, to fashion the final score at 14-11.

Mercer out-shot Wagner 44-39, led in ground balls 49-38 and won 18-of-28 faceoffs. Both goalies, Wagner sophomore Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) and Mercer’s Justin Bateman, registered 14 saves apiece.

Ward led Mercer with four points on three goals and an assist while Collins and Link added three and two goals apiece, respectively.

With the loss to Mercer, the Seahawks fall to 0-7 on the season while the Bears improve to 1-8. Four of Wagner’s losses have come by four goals or less, including one-goal losses to Saint Joseph’s (6-5) and VMI (12-11 OT).

Wagner is next in action on Saturday, March 24 when the Seahawks play its third straight road game when they travel to the University of Hartford to meet the Hawks in a 2:00 pm faceoff.
