| ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team lost in its first regular-season game on Saturday (Feb. 9), falling to the 15th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, 11-6, at Oosterbaan Field House. Freshman Kyle Jackson (Sarnia, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led the Wolverines with two goals and one assist. Sophomore David McCormack (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) scored twice, and fellow sophomore Will Meter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) added a goal and an assist. After Michigan fell behind, 1-0, after the first period, Jackson tied the score with 13:24 left in the second quarter. Penn State scored the next three goals to go out in front for good, 4-1, but the Maize and Blue cut it to 5-3 at the half. McCormack scored twice in a span of five minutes, including a low shot with 1:02 left in the second quarter. In the opening half, freshman goalie Gerald Logan (Sachem, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) made 10 stops. Penn State used five straight goals in the third quarter to open up a 10-3 lead. The Wolverines responded with three straight goals between the third and fourth quarters to cut the deficit to 10-6. Senior Thomas Paras (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) scored with 6:17 left in the third, assisted by Jackson. Meter spun around the crease and scored on a low shot with 11:45 left in the fourth, and Jackson drilled a long shot two minutes later. U-M struggled to win faceoffs and ground balls throughout the game, which led to Penn State's large shot disparity (57-30). Michigan won 5-of-20 faceoffs and lost the ground ball battle, 44-27. Logan turned aside 19 shots for the Maize and Blue, while close defender J.D. Johnson (Malibu, Calif./Loyola) had a game-high seven ground balls. Michigan travels to Louisville, Ky., to begin a seven-game road swing against Bellarmine on Saturday (Feb. 16). Game time from Frazier Field is slated for 1 p.m. |
