Adelphi vs. Saint Anselm

The Game Story:
Hempstead, N.Y. - Sophomore Ian Kuchta (Norwalk, CT) recorded three of his four goals in a 6-1 second quarter surge as the Adelphi University men's lacrosse rolled past visting Saint Anselm Colllege, 13-5, in their season home opener. The Panthers improve to 1-1 overall, while the Hawks fall to 1-1.

Saint Anselm got on board first as junior Chris Murphy scored at 9:47. Junior Edward Ege (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) evened the score in the 11th minute. The Hawks answered in the final seconds of the quarter, 2-1.

It was all Adelphi in the second half, with Kutchta scoring back-to-back goals, both assisted by Ege, who contributed four in the game. Sophomore Christian Colantuoni (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) closed out the 3-0 rally on a feed from senior Tyler Burton (Elbridge, N.Y.) in the 19th minute. The Hawks added their third goal of the night in the 25th minute, but the Panthers answered with three straight to take a 7-3 lead at the half.

The Hawks opened the second half with a quick sprint to the goal by Jeff Dunkle. Burton picked up his second goal of the night in the 36th minute to give Adelphi an 8-4 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Both teams battled back and forth in the last stanza with Matt O'Connell scoring what would prove to be Saint Anslem's last goal in the 53rd minute. The Panthers tallied five goals in the last six minutes of play,with freshman Daniel Gaudet (Plymouth, Mass.) having the last word with 13 seconds left in regulation.

Senior Marc Burton (Mississauga, Ontario) had two goals and two assists in the game, while Tyler Burton and Colantuoni had two goals and one assist each.

Sophomore Drew Smith was impressive in goal for the Panthers, making 16 stops while facing 35 shots. Dan Flynn and Pat Acone split time in goal for Saint Anselm, recording four and five saves, respectively.

Adelphi returns to action next Saturday, March 8, as they travel to Limestone for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
