| SALISBURY, NC Wingate senior Drew Penny (Stafford, VA) scored a goal with
2:20 remaining to lift the Bulldogs to a 10-9 win over host Catawba in Deep
South Conference lacrosse action on Thursday night at Frock Field. With the
win, the Bulldogs even their mark at 6-6 overall and claim second place in
the DSC with a 5-1 record. Catawba falls to 6-6 and 4-2. Both team will
host a first round tournament game on Tuesday.
Penny^Òs goal capped a three-goal rally by Wingate, which trailed 9-7 with seven minutes remaining. Andy Tyler (Hudson, OH) scored a man-up goal at the seven minute mark and Sean McElroy (Columbia, MD) scored a man-down goal to tie the score at 9-9 with 5:50 left. Catawba had built an early 4-1 lead, but Wingate would answer with three straight to knot the score before Jason Windett (Magnolia, DE) gave the Indians a 5-4 advantage with 1:40 to play in the half. Jeremy Knapp (Hagerstown, MD) put the Tribe up 6-4 just 49 seconds into the second half, but the Wingate reeled off three straight to take its first lead at 7-6 on a goal by Ian Hill (Rochester, NY) with 9:38 left in the third quarter. Catawba responded with three goals of its own, the final two by Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) for the 9-7 lead with 14:02 remaining. Wingate then scored the final three goals. Hill, Maxwell and Penny each had a pair of goals for Wingate, while Windett and Riley tallied twice for Catawba. Hill and Maxwell had a pair of assists. |
