March 1, 2008
The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 1, 2008) - Junior attack Greg Cerar (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored three goals and dished out two assists and Rob Renetta (East Syracuse, N.Y) scored three goals and had an assist, as the sixth-ranked C.W. Post men's lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goals, which overcame an early one-goal deficit to win a non-conference match-up against Bryant University, 11-5, on Saturday afternoon at Hickox Field.

The visiting Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) took a 1-0 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter when Brad Burton scored his first goal of the season. The Pioneers would tie the score with 6:40 remaining in the second quarter on Dave Loftus’s (Merrick, N.Y.) seventh goal of the season, assisted by Matt Dimler (Long Valley, N.J.). C.W. Post would take the lead for good just a minute later, when Thomas Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) scored on an assist from Mike Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y.). The Pioneers went into the break holding a 2-1 lead.

The third quarter saw C.W. Post score five unanswered goals, and run their lead to an 8-1 count. After trading goals, the Bulldogs scored two straight to pull within five, but that was as close as they would come, as the Pioneers held on for an 11-5 victory.

In addition to Cerar and Renetta, Loftus scored two goals, and Dimler added a goal and an assist.

Pioneer goalkeeper Daniel Sciulla (Merrick, N.Y.) earned the win between the pipes, making 10 saves.

Bryant University outshot the Pioneers by a 35-27 count, but the Pioneers had 21 shots on goal compared with 15 for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Mike Cama (Levittown, N.Y.) won 9-of-17 face-offs. The Pioneers were successful in 13-of-17 clear opportunities, but were edged by Bryant 32-30 in ground balls.

The Pioneers return to action on Friday, March 7, traveling to Briarcliffe for a 4 p.m. start.
