The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2008) – Junior attacker Dave Loftus (Merrick, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with one minute left in the fourth quarter to propel fourth-ranked C.W. Post past eighth-ranked Dowling College, 9-8, in a Saturday afternoon thriller on Hickox Field.

C.W. Post improves to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference while Dowling slips to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in conference action.

Loftus led the attack, scoring three goals in the game for the Pioneers. For Dowling, sophomore attacker Kyle O’Brien and senior attacker Ryan Campbell each had three tallies.

With the game tied at 1-1 to start the second quarter, C.W. Post took a 2-1 lead on an even goal from Loftus at 10:09 Dowling exploded for three goals with a goal from Campbell at 7:05 and back-to-back goals from O’Brien to give the Golden Lions a 4-3 advantage at the half.

The Pioneers tie the game 1:18 into the third half when junior midfielder Matt Dimler (Long Valley, N.J.) scored on an overhand shot. Junior midfielder Mike Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y.) helped reclaim the lead for C.W. Post at 12:13.

Dowling again tied the game on a goal from O’Brien with 42 seconds remaining in the third. With eight seconds remaining in the quarter, junior attacker Greg Cerar (Farmingdale, N.Y.) found the back of the net to put the Pioneers ahead, 6-5.

To open the fourth quarter, freshman midfielder Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) scored his fourth goal of the season on a pass from senior attacker Rob Renetta (East Syracuse, N.Y.) to give the Pioneers a two-goal cushion with 11:41 left in the fourth quarter.

Dowling roared back and scored three unanswered goals, beginning at 10:51 with a goal from sophomore midfielder Brandon Bergersen followed up with goals from senior midfielder Nick Cotter at 9:37 and Campbell at 7:55 to give the Golden Lions an 8-7 lead.

Trailing by one goal, Renetta fired a shot past the Dowling goalkeeper with 1:30 left on the clock on a pass from Spinelli to tie the game and set up for Loftus’ game-winner.

Freshman goalkeeper Michael Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made 12 stops in goal to improve his record to 3-0. Dowling’s Nick Tracy made a game-high 18 saves.

C.W. Post will close out its regular season at home against Dominican College on Saturday, May 3 at 12 p.m.
