Cw Post vs. Mercyhurst
April 9, 2011
The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – C.W. Post's Jimmy Johnston scored two goals, including the game-winner with 14:05 to play in the fourth, to lift the second-ranked Pioneers over the No. 4 Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in Brookville, N.Y.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the second half, C.W. Post produced its second two-goal run of the game to break the deadlock. Eddie Plompen made it a 3-2 game at the 7:33 mark of the third before Johnston netted his second of the match early in the fourth, giving the home team a two-goal advantage.

Senior Andy Winslow gave the Lakers life shortly after as he cut the deficit to one off of a pass from classmate Kevin Coholan at 12:25. After several minutes of back-and-forth action, though, the Lakers saw their chances at tying the game disappear as several of their shots went wide before Pioneer goalkeeper Mike Giordano made his 13th stop of the game with 10 seconds remaining to gain possession for the home team and run out the clock.

Despite holding an 8-5 advantage in shots in the first quarter, Mercyhurst found itself trailing 2-0 on goals by Keith Rodriguez and Johnston at 7:02 and 1:22.

The Lakers countered the run with a two-goal surge of its own. Sophomore Brian Scheetz evened the slate on back-to-back scores that bridged the first and second quarters, taking the teams into the break with a 2-2 score.

Along with the shot advantage in the first quarter, Mercyhurst outshot the Pioneers in two of the other three as well, finishing with a 36-26 edge. Senior Zach Nash made 14 saves for the Lakers while Giordano finished with 13 stops.

Mercyhurst will look to bounce back from the loss when it returns home to host conference foe Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday, Apr. 17 at Tullio Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
