|BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 18, 2009) Ė Senior attacker Dave Loftus (Merrick, N.Y.) scored five goals with an assist as No. 2 C.W. Post defeated No. 5 Mercyhurst College, 10-5, in East Coast Conference menís lacrosse action Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field. C.W. Post held a 4-2 lead at the half before outscoring the Lakers, 4-1, in the third quarter to pull away. |
The win is the first against Mercyhurst since the 2005 season when the Pioneers pulled away with a 17-10 win over the Lakers.
C.W. Post improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Mercyhurst falls to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
The Pioneers outshot the Lakers at a 36-31 clip and held a 30-24 advantage in ground balls.
Senior attacker Greg Cerar (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) contributed a goal and three assists in the game for C.W. Post.
For Mercyhurst, senior midfielder Mike Thon led the team with two goals while junior midfielder Tyler Burton scored a goal with two assists in the game.
Cerar scored the gameís first goal with 10:10 remaining in the first quarter on a pass from junior midfielder Joe Meo (West Sayville, N.Y.). The Lakers tied the game with 7:08 to play in the second quarter when Burton fired a shot in on an assist from junior attacker Trevor Rice at 7:08.
Loftus scored the go-ahead goal at 6:18 with Cerar assisting on the play and minutes later scored his second goal of the game with 2:51 left to play in the half.
Sophomore midfielder Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) scored his first goal 51 seconds into the third quarter on a pass from Loftus. Mercyhurst cut the lead down to 5-3 after Ton scored his first goal of the game at 9:29.
From there, the Pioneers got help with three straight goals from freshman attacker Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Messina and Loftus to cushion C.W. Postís lead to 8-3 to begin the fourth quarter.
Thon scored Mercyhurstís fourth goal unassisted at 12:40 in the fourth before Messina and Loftus added two more scores for C.W. Post. Junior midfielder Mike Sciulli scored the gameís final goal with 1:56 left to play in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Daniel Sciulla (Merrick, N.Y.) made 16 saves in the cage to record his 10th win of the season. Senior goalkeeper Jason LaShomb made 11 stops in goal for the Lakers.
C.W. Post will play out its final home game of the regular season when it takes on conference opponent Molloy College Saturday, April 25 at 12 p.m.
