|The Game Story:|
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 2, 2011) – Senior attacker Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored a game-high four goals as No. 4 C.W. Post emerged as the victor in a 9-5 win over New York Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference men’s lacrosse action on HIckox Field.
The win improves C.W. Post to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in ECC action. The loss ends a four-game win streak for NYIT, who falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the ECC.
It was a true grudge match on the field as both teams fought hard to gain position on the field. The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter with goals from A.P. Nist and Chris Lubin. The Pioneers put one goal on the board in the quarter when senior midfielder Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) broke through the defense and fired a shot into the net.
The Pioneer offense was much stronger in the second quarter as the opened play with four unanswered goals with the first three from Coric. Two of Coric’s goals were from man-up opportunities. Senior midfielder Jimmy Johnston (Farmingville, N.Y.) tallied the Pioneers’ fifth goal on a pass from senior midfielder Brad DeSouza (Trumbull, Conn.).
The Bears climbed back into the game and scored two more before the end of the half. The Pioneers led 5-4 at the break.
In the third quarter, NYIT took advantage of a man-up opportunity after a penalty was called on junior attacker Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) for interference and scored on a goal from Joe Herman at 6:16.
C.W. Post responded just over two minutes later when junior attacker Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal with 4:04 left to play.
The Bears failed to score another goal for the remainder of the game as stingy defense combined with four saves from senior goalkeeper Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) helped keep the visiting team off the board in the fourth.
C.W. Post finished the game outshooting NYIT, 49-23, and held a 43-31 advantage in ground balls. In addition, the Pioneers edged out the Bears in face-offs, going 9-for-17 in the circle to their 8-for-17.
Both teams also had six extra man opportunities. The Pioneers were successful on three attempts and the Bears converted on two.
Johnston completed the game with a hat trick while Rodriguez and Messina each registered a goal for the Pioneers. Giordano matched his season-high of 14 saves in goal.
Chris Lubin led NYIT in scoring with two goals while Joe Herman, Mike Palmer and A.P. Nist each had two. William McGee combined to make 15 saves in the game.
C.W. Post is back in action next Saturday when it hosts No. 5 Mercyhurst at 12 p.m. on Hickox Field.
