The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 4, 2009) – First-ranked New York Institute of Technology put forth a strong fourth quarter charge but could not keep up as a strong third quarter from third-ranked C.W. Post was enough to hold off the Bears, 16-12, in an East Coast Conference men’s lacrosse clash Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.

The win improves C.W. Post to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the Bears lose their first game and drop to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the ECC.

The Pioneers outshot the Bears, 49-44, and held a 46-37 advantage in ground balls.

Sophomore attack Nicholas Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) led the offense with five goals and one assist, including three in the first quarter. Additionally, senior attack Greg Cerar (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) tallied six points on two goals and four assists.

Senior attack Keith Henderson and junior attack Austin Carino each scored three goals for the Bears in the game.

NYIT drew first blood with a goal from sophomore midfielder Bryan Gil scored the game’s first goal on a feed from senior midfielder Matt Messina at 12:12. Cerar tied the score at 9:01 with an unassisted goal. The Pioneers added two more unanswered goals from Coric, including a man-up goal at 7:01 to give C.W. Post a 3-1 lead.

NYIT cut the lead to one with a goal from Carino at 4:13. C.W. Post added to its lead when senior attacker Dave Loftus (Merrick, N.Y.) fired a shot into the goal cage at 3:10. Coric scored his third goal with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bears closed the gap and tied the game with goals from Carino and Messina with 12:04 to play.

Senior Matt Dimler (Long Valley, N.J.) scored his first goal of the game at 11:10 to regain the lead for the Pioneers.

NYIT tied things up for the second time with a goal from senior attacker Rob LeGuen and went ahead in the game when Gil bounced a shot into the goal at 6:18.

The Pioneers tied the game just before the half when Coric scored his fourth goal on a pass from Cerar at 3:55 that started an 8-0 scoring spree for the Pioneers that carried through to the fourth quarter and gave C.W. Post a 14-7 lead.

The Bears’ offense rallied hard in the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals from Carino and Messina that brought the score to 14-9 in favor of the Pioneers.

Dimler scored his second goal of the game at 3:26 and added another goal with 1:51 remaining when he chipped the shot in on a scramble in front of the goal.

Henderson scored all three of his goals in the quarter, beginning at 3:09, and scored the game’s final two goals with 1:40 and with one second remaining.

Senior Daniel Sciulla (Merrick, N.Y.) was crucial in preserving the win, making 18 tops in goal. Senior defender Jon Kology (West Babylon, N.Y.) caused four turnovers on defense and picked up four ground balls.

C.W. Post returns to action April 11 at Adelphi University at 7 p.m. The Pioneers will host Mercyhurst College April 18 at 12 p.m.
