The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 7, 2007) - The fourth-ranked C.W. Post men's lacrosse team took an 8-6 lead into the fourth period Saturday afternoon at Hickox Field, but third-ranked NYIT's Kevin Hennessy scored the final three goals of the contest helping the visiting Bears past the host Pioneers, 11-9.

NYIT (6-0, 1-0 ECC), the nation's only remaining undefeated team in Division II, scored two goals in the first 2:50 of the contest. C.W. Post (7-2, 1-1 ECC) freshman Matt Merritt (2 g) and the Bears' Paul Flowers traded goals at the 8:01 and 6:43 mark of the first period respectively, before the Pioneers' Greg Cerar (2 g) and Rob Renetta (1 g, 1 a) tallied to tie the score at 3-3, with 8:30 remaining in the second period.

Hennessy scored his first goal of the day with 5:52 left in the half, before Jake Delillo dented the net with 2:32 left to push the NYIT advantage to 5-3. With under seven seconds remaining in the half, C.W. Post sophomore Charles Senn (1 g, 1 a) fired a shot past NYIT goalie Dan Goosk (11 saves) to pull the hosts to within one goal at the break.

C.W. Post junior captain Matt Dimler scored two unassisted goals in the first 1:41 of the second half, giving his team its first lead of the day, 6-5, with 13:19 left in the third period. Matt Messina (2 g, 1 a, 3 ct) tied the game for NYIT with 12:33 to go, before Dimler found Merritt on a man-up play halfway through the period to put the Pioneers up 7-6. Cerar scored unassisted with 2:51 left in the third for his 22nd goal of the season, to double the C.W. Post lead.

NYIT scored five of the six goals in the fourth period, and got back-to-back tallies by Messina and freshman Austin Carino (man-up) to knot the game at 8-all with 9:33 remaining. Pioneers junior Tom Maloney fired home a pass from Senn in an unsettled situation to give the hosts a 9-8 lead with 6:55 to go.

From there, Hennessy scored three straight goals to seal C.W. Post's fate. He scored the game-tying goal with 5:56 remaining off a pass from Matt Sullivan (1 g, 2 a), before scoring an unassisted tally for the eventual game-winner with 3:08 to go. Following a NYIT time-out, Hennessy raced in to score an insurance goal with 2:04 left to give the Bears the victory.

NYIT held slight advantages in shots (36-33), ground balls (32-29) and face-offs (14-of-24), while both teams had one man-up goal apiece.

C.W. Post senior Nick Dello-Iacono made 11 saves in net to aid the Pioneers' efforts.

Head coach John Jez and the Pioneers are back at home next Saturday (April 14), when they play host to second-ranked Mercyhurst at Hickox Field. Opening face-off is slated for noon.
