|BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2012) – Senior attacker Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) registered a hat trick and led No. 4 C.W. Post past Wheeling Jesuit University, 9-6, in both the season and East Coast Conference opener Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.|
C.W. Post is now 1-0 and will take on Seton Hill next Saturday at 12 p.m. on Hickox. Wheeling Jesuit falls to 0-1.
The Cardinals scored the game's first goal when Landon DelPrince fired a shot in at 11:19 of the first quarter. The Pioneers evened the score on an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Octovio Bernabo (Mahopac, N.Y.) at 6:25 to start a 4-0 run through the end of the first quarter.
Wheeling Jesuit cut the lead in half in the second quarter with a goal from Kevin Figaniak before the Pioneers answered with three more goals, including two from junior attacker Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.).
At the half, C.W. Post held a 7-3 advantage. Both teams recorded 16 shots in the half.
In the third quarter, senior attacker Doug Hoch (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season at 5:07 to put the Pioneers ahead, 8-3. Wheeling Jesuit responded with a goal from Tyler Johnson with 1:25 to play in the quarter.
The Cardinals threatened in the fourth quarter by adding two goals and outshot the Pioneers, 8-4. The second goal was scored by DelPrince, who had two in the game, and made it a two-goal game with 9:01 left in regulation.
C.W. Post got out of the jam as Plompen scored his final goal on a feed from Patterson on a man-up opportunity with 7:10 to play.
Patterson finished with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists. Bernabo had a goal and an assist while Hoch had a pair of goals. Freshman Sam Price (Glenville, Pa.) made 10 saves in goal to record his first collegiate win.
DelPrince and Johnson each had a pair of goals to lead Wheeling Jesuit. Figaniak and Aaron Gutentag each scored a goal with an assist. Jim LaPenna made eight saves in goal.
C.W. Post finished the game outshooting the Cardinals, 30-27, and held a 42-36 advantage on ground balls.
