The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 17, 2010) – Sophomore attacker Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman attacker Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) combined for 18 points to elevate No. 4 C.W. Post over Wheeling Jesuit University, 22-5, in an East Coast Conference men’s lacrosse clash Saturday afternoon on Hickox Field.
The win improves C.W. Post to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in ECC action while Wheeling Jesuit slips to 3-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
The Pioneers scored seven goals in each of the first two quarters to take a 14-0 lead at halftime. Plompen accounted for five goals and assist and Patterson added two goals and four assists in the half.
The Cardinals scored their first goal of the game in the third quarter when freshman midfielder Ricky Rano (Westerville, Ohio) fired a shot into the back of the net at 14:36. WJU scored another less than two minutes later when senior attacker Eric Jenkins (Pleasanton, Calif.) scored on a pass from senior midfielder John Dunbar (Eagan, Minn.).
The Pioneers responded with five unanswered goals in the quarter, including three from Plompen.
Wheeling Jesuit got one more goal in before the last of the third when Dunbar knocked the ball into the goal on a pass from Rano with four seconds to spare.
Rano scored his second goal of the game just over a minute into the fourth quarter and the teams played scoreless for the next eight minutes until Plompen scored again on a pass from junior attacker Vito Minerva (Nesconset, N.Y.) at 5:58.
Dunbar tallied the Cardinals’ final goal on an unassisted shot with 2:18 to play. Still the scoring wasn’t through for the Pioneers as sophomore attacker Marc Andreassi (Holbrook, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder James Kozlakowski (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored the final two goals with under 10 seconds left to play.
Plompen finished with seven goals and Patterson scored four. Messina and junior midfielder James Johnston (Farmingville, N.Y.) each scored two goals. Junior goalkeeper Dan Orlando (South Hempstead, N.Y.) got the win in goal after playing a scoreless first half.
Rano and Dunbar led the Cardinals with two goals apiece.
