The Game Story:
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 6, 2010)- Junior forward Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored six goals and added two assists while junior attacker Doug Hoch (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) contributed three goals and three assists to propel C.W. Post past Seton Hill, 17-4, in the Pioneers’ home opener Saturday afternoon.

C.W. Post improves to an overall record of 3-0, 1-0 in the ECC, while the Griffons fall to 1-1, 0-1 in conference play.

Hoch opened up the scoring as he connected with Coric at the 9:41 mark to put the Pioneers on the board first. Seton Hill answered back less than thirty seconds later as Joel Zalesky scored his first of three goals for the afternoon to tie the score at one goal apiece. Sophomore Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) found the back of the net with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter to give the Pioneers a one goal advantage. Griffons’ midfielder Josh Holland scored an unassisted goal of his own to even up the score. C.W. Post senior midfielder Joe Meo (West Sayville, N.Y.) netted his first of three goals off a feed from Hoch to give C.W. Post a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Coric opened up a scoring frenzy for the Pioneers, scoring two goals in the beginning of the second quarter to give C.W. Post a three goal cushion. Hoch continued the run for the Pioneers as he converted a pass from teammate Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manoy, N.Y.), notching his second goal of the afternoon. Coric scored his third goal of the quarter with just 2:12 left on the clock to give C.W. Post a comfortable 7-2 lead at halftime.

The Griffons attempted to rally back as Zalesky registered his second unassisted goal just a minute and a half into the third quarter to cut the Pioneers’ lead down to four. Coric and Hoch connected for the second time to bring C.W. Post’s lead back to five and open up a ten goal streak for the Pioneers. Junior midfielder James Johnston (Farmingville, N.Y.) tallied two goals while Hoch scored his third and final goal off a pass from Coric. Coric added his fifth goal of the game to widen the Pioneer’s lead to 12-3 at the end of the third quarter.

The Pioneers scored five more goals in the fourth quarter, including one from junior Vito Minerva (Nesconset, N.Y.), before Seton Hill sophomore Greg Chaples added one more mark for the Griffons with 30 seconds left to bring the final score to 17-4.

Senior midfielder Mike Cama (Levittown, N.Y.) won 16 of 22 faceoffs, while picking up 14 ground balls for C.W. Post.

Junior goalkeeper Dan Orlando (South Hempstead, N.Y.) made four saves in net during 50 minutes of play to earn his third win of the season, while teammate Drew Smith (East Hampton, N.Y.) block two shots between the pipes. Corey Struss registered 26 saves during the first three quarters for Seton Hill, while Christopher Ilse contributed two saves to the Griffons’ efforts.

C.W. Post successfully completeted 20 of 22 clear attempts and held a 39 to 23 advantage in ground balls. The Pioneers outshot the Griffons by a 52-15 margin and caused 13 turnovers.

Head coach John Jez’s Pioneers will be back in action Sunday, March 7, as they host Mercy College in an East Coast Conference matchup. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
