|BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2011) – Junior attacker Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied six goals with an assist to lead top-ranked C.W. Post over Chestnut Hill University, 13-7, during Saturday morning’s East Coast Conference men’s lacrosse opener on Hickox Field.|
C.W. Post improves its overall record to 4-0 and 1-0 in ECC play while Chestnut Hill evens out at 1-1.
Both teams battled for an advantage in the first quarter as they combined for seven goals. The Pioneers scored first when junior midfielder Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored a minute and six seconds into the game.
The Griffins answered back with a pair of goals from Mark Winkelspecht and Mike Landau to go ahead, 2-1.
The Pioneers evened the score when Rodriguez scored his second goal of the game at 10:22 in the quarter and senior attacker Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) added a man-up goal on a pass from Plompen at 8:19.
Seton Hill tied the game up at 7:08 when Alex Kurbjun first in an unassisted goal.
The Pioneers scored the final goal of the quarter when Rodriguez scored unassisted at 3:56.
C.W. Post outscored Chestnut Hill 5-1 in the second quarter that included four from Plompen as well as a goal from senior face-off specialist Ronnie Irving (Glen Head, N.Y.) scored on a breakaway after scooping up the ground ball.
The Pioneers added two more in the third quarter from senior midfielder Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) and Plompen.
The Griffins mounted a strong comeback effort in the fourth as they outscored their hosts, 3-2, but fell well short of closing the gap.
The Pioneers outshot the Griffins, 42-20, and held a 49-26 advantage in ground balls.
Rodriguez finished the game with three goals and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made seven stops for the win.
C.W. Post returns to action to host American International on Sunday, Feb. 27
