The Game Story:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (March 21, 2009) – The third-ranked men’s lacrosse team scored two quick goals at the beginning of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 4-4, but the second-ranked Dolphins answered with two of their own and held of the Pioneer comeback attempt as Le Moyne was able to slip past C.W. Post, 6-5, on Saturday evening at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. in a matchup of two undefeated and top-ranked Division II squads.
The Dolphins improve to 4-0 while the Pioneers suffer their first loss and now stand at 6-1.
Le Moyne got on the board just 30 seconds into the game as Matt Chadderdon scored an unassisted goal to put the ‘Fins on top, 1-0.
The hosts would double the lead less than a minute later as Jack Harmatuk scored an unassisted goal at 13:40 to give Le Moyne the 2-0 advantage.
The teams played the rest of the first quarter scoreless, and opened the second quarter with four scoreless minutes, until Le Moyne’s Jack Mooney notched an unassisted goal at 12:42 to give the ‘Fins a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers finally found the back of the net as Joe Meo (West Sayville, N.Y.) took a feed for Matt Dimler (Long Valley, N.Y.) and scored to bring the Pioneers within two goals, 3-1. The teams headed into the halftime break with Le Moyne leading by the same 3-1 count.
The Dolphins would again push their lead back to three goals as Brian Griffin scored an unassisted goal off a faceoff to open the third quarter, but Dimler answered back for the Pioneers just five minutes later as his unassisted shot at 9:32 found the back of the net and cut the Dolphin lead in half, 4-2.
The rest of the third quarter saw scoreless play, but the Pioneers found a spark to open the fourth, as Nick Lacagnina (Farmingville, N.Y.) picked up a ground ball on the faceoff and found Dave Loftus (Merrick, N.Y.), who made the shot count as he pulled the Pioneers to within a goal, 4-3.
Less than ten seconds later, Mike Cama (Levittown, N.Y.) won a faceoff and skipped a shot past Le Moyne goalie Doug McIver to tie the game at 4-4 with 14:18 remaining in the game.
However, Le Moyne re-took the lead at 7:52 with an unassisted tally, and one minute later seconds later, Brian Welch assisted on Chadderdon’s second goal of the game at 6:39 to give the ‘Fins a 6-4 hold.
Dimler scored his second goal of the game with 1:20 remaining in the game, but the Pioneers could not get the ball back on the offensive end as the Dolphins were able to hold on for the win.
Daniel Sciulla (Merrick, N.Y.) made 13 saves in goal for the Pioneers, and Cama won 6-of-15 faceoff attempts. Dimler had two goals to go along with one assist.
For Le Moyne, McIver made eight saves earning his fourth win of the season. Chadderdon had two goals for the Dolphins, who scored five of their six goals unassisted.
The Pioneers will play again on Monday, March 23, as they host Dominican at 4 p.m. in a makeup contest.
