St. Andrews Lacrosse Advances to Deep South Semi-Finals

LAURINBURG, N.C. - St. Andrews (8-5) advanced to the semi-final round of the Deep South Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament with a 12-8 victory over Lees-McRae (0-14).

The Knights will take on No. 6 Catawba, who upset No. 3 Pfeiffer, at 8 p.m. Friday while top-seeded Limestone will face No. 4 Wingate at 5 p.m. Catawba will host the semi-final and championship rounds in Salisbury, N.C. The title game will be played Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Bobcats scored three goals in a nine-minute span to take a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but the St. Andrews defense held Lees-McRae scoreless for the next 32 and a half minutes. The Knights got on the board when junior Steve Guarini found the back of the net with 2:10 remaining in the first quarter.

Guarini's tally was the first of nine straight goals for St. Andrews. Senior Scott Gordon scored three goals during the Knights' offensive burst while Guarini added two more.

The Knights held a 6-3 lead at halftime and stretched that margin to 9-3 with 8:26 left in the third quarter.

Lees-McRae came within reach when freshman Adam Kemnitz scored back-to-back goals in the third frame, and the Bobcats found the back of the net twice more to trail 9-7 with 8:17 remaining in the contest.

St. Andrews answered with three straight goals within a minute and a half that began with junior Keith Belward's tally at the 4:06 mark. Lees-McRae scored one final goal with 18 seconds on the clock.

Knight senior Stephen Belderes had two goals while senior Mike McCarthy recorded a game-high three assists. Junior Brendon Burke had one goal and two assists.

Freshman Josh Spriggs added two goals to the Bobcat scoring column.
