|WINGATE, NC -- Top-seeded and NCAA II fourth-ranked Limestone took a 9-3
lead at the half and went on to defeat fourth-seeded St. Andrews 15-3 to
advance to the finals of the 2003 Deep South Conference Men's Lacrosse
Tournament on Friday afternoon. The tournament is being hosted by Wingate
University at Belk Stadium and Martin Field. The Saints, the defending
tournament and NCAA II champions, improve to 10-2, while St. Andrews ends
its season at 4-9.
First team DSC attackman Jason Randolph (Arnold, MD) scored a pair of goals
and added an assist in the opening five minutes as Limestone jumped to a
4-0 lead with 10:25 left in the opening quarter. St. Andrews would make a
brief run, cutting the deficit to 5-3 on goals by Kris Hartzell (Lacombe,
Alberta, CANADA) and Bryan Riddell (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA) with 8:13
remaining in the half. Limestone would add four unanswered goals before
the half to grab its 9-3 lead.
Limestone would hold the Knights scoreless during the second half, while
the Saints added four tallies in the third quarter and two more in the
final quarter. Freshman David Wooster (Annapolis, MD) led Limestone with
three goals and three assists. Randolph had three goals and two helpers,
while Devan Spilker (Glen Birnie, MD) had three goals. Limestone will face
the winner of the second semifinal between second-seeded Wingate and
third-seeded Catawba on Sunday at 2 p.m.
