|MARS HILL, NC - The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Lees-McRae College 15-6 in their home opener Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. MHC improved to 2-0 while the Bobcats fell to 1-1 on the season.|
Both teams struggled to find the back of the net in the first quarter with each team able to score only one goal in the first quarter. MHC won the second frame 4-2 to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room at the intermission. After head coach Sean Woods made some adjustments at halftime, MHC out scored the Bobcats 10-3 in the second stanza to obtain the nine-point victory. MHC out scored LMC 5-2 in the third quarter and 5-1 in the final period.
Nick Sigona (Auburn, NY) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made eight saves. Adam Canoy played the first 56:44 in goal for LMC and made 13 saves. Andrew Nesdill played the final 3:16 in goal for the Bobcats and made two saves while allowing one goal.
Tyler Farmer (Calgary, Alberta) scored three goals to lead the Lions offensively. Phillip Burke (Brentwood, TN), Jeff Cizdziel (Stafford, VA), Christian McLean (Orchard Park, NY) and Eric Benesch (Bloomington, Ontario) scored two goals apiece. Burke notched the game-winner. Kris Frier (Tully, NY), David Hodgins (Windsor, Ontario) and Noah Baran (Palatine, IL) tallied two assists apiece in the win. Cizdziel won 16-21 face-offs and led the Lions with eight ground balls.
MHC will return to action on February 23 when they play at Pfeiffer University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
