| (Mars Hill, NC) - Mercyhurst College sophomore attack Troy Ledbetter
(Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore HS) set a school one-game record with seven goals
Thursday, February 28, as the Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team opened its 2002
season with an 11-7 win over Mars Hill in Mars Hill, North Carolina. The seven
goals were one better than the prior mark of six, held jointly by 1998
teammates Jon Savage and Bruce Alexander.
Ledbetter scored three goals in the first quarter, two in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth. Mercyhurst led wire-to-wire, opening a 4-1 lead after a quarter, stretching it to 6-2 at intermission, and maintaining a four-goal lead at 9-5 after three quarters. Senior midfield Patrick Merrill (Orangeville, Ontario) contributed two goals while freshman midfield Andrew Sands (Wallingford, Pa/Strath Haven) and freshman attack Ian Komorek (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) had the other tallies. Sophomore goaltender Mike Rispoli picked up the win in goal. Mars Hill dropped its third straight in an 0-3 season. As a freshman last season, Ledbetter finished second on the team in goals (23) and points (26). Mercyhurst will rest a day, then finish its brief southern trip with a match against Lees-McRae College Saturday, March 2, in Banner Elk, North Carolina. Mercyhurst was ranked #10 in a Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll. |
