Mars Hill vs. Belmont Abbey

The Game Story:
MARS HILL, NC - The Lions' lacrosse squad won their 2006 Deep South Conference opener Friday night against Belmont Abbey College by a score of 14-10. MHC improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the DSC while Belmont Abbey fell to 0-1 on the season and in the league.

MHC scored five unanswered goals in the final frame to seal the win after Jonathan Fuggit (Crofton, MD) tied the game at the 13:52 mark. David Kemp (Webster, NY) recorded the game-winning score with 8:31 left in regulation on an unassisted breakaway. MHC never trailed in the contest.

MHC jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter but Belmont Abbey closed the gap out scoring the Lions 3-2 in the second stanza to send the teams into the locker room with Mars Hill leading, 7-5. Belmont won the third quarter with three goals to the Lions' two but the big fourth quarter burst led to the MHC victory. Kemp scored two goals and provided teammate Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ontario) with an assist during the five-goal run in the fourth frame.

MHC out shot Belmont Abbey 42-to-34, had 11 more ground balls (64-53) and won 18-of-28 face-offs. Belmont Abbey had 10 fewer turnovers (25-25) than the Lions.

Kemp finished the night with four goals and one assist followed by Chapman who recorded three goals and two assists. Jeffrey Cizdziel (Stafford, VA) had a pair of goals and one assist in the win. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in the net for MHC and made 16 saves.

Fuggit led all scorers with five goals to lead Belmont Abbey followed by Aaron Flood (Pikesville, MD) with three scores. Mark Kelske (Bohemia, NY) also played the entire game in goal for Belmont Abbey and he recorded 15 saves in the loss.

MHC will return to action on Wednesday, February 22 when they host DSC rival Presbyterian College. Game time is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
