|NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team improved its record to 5-1 on Tuesday night, picking up a win over Northeast-10 rival Bentley College, 6-5. Freshman Michael Balbuena (Falmouth, MA) scored a career-high three goals, while sophomore Cory Spinale (Wakefield, MA) was remarkable between the pipes, turning aside 19 Falcon shots.|
Sophomore Mark Webber (Mansfield, MA) opening the night’s scoring, tallying an unassisted goal 3:04 into the game. Balbuena netted his first goal of the game to put the Warriors up 2-0 with 10:28 remaining in the half, and after a late Bentley goal, the teams entered halftime with Merrimack leading 2-1.
Senior Thomas Fennel (Ridgefield, CT) put Merrimack up 3-2 with 6:54 left in the third quarter, and after a Falcon goal, Balbuena added his second of the night, with 33 seconds on the clock.
Just 46 seconds into the final frame, senior Kyle Beaudoin (Acton, MA) added to Merrimack’s lead. With under 10 minutes remaining in the game, and with the score 5-3, Balbuena completed the hat-trick, adding what looked to be an insurance goal for the Warriors, but later proved to be the game winner. Bentley added two goals late, but the Merrimack defense, and Spinale’s goaltending clinched the win for the sixth ranked Warriors.
Merrimack plays again on Saturday afternoon when the team takes on Bryant University at 3 p.m. at Gillette Stadium.
