Molloy vs. Saint Michael's

The Game Story:
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.- The Saint Michael's men's lacrosse team was defeated by Molly College, 8-6, in their season opener on Friday night. Freshman Mike Bednarz (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) tallied three goals in his first collegiate game for the Purple Knights.

For the Lions (1-1), Dom Toscano and Keith Galante netted two goals apiece and Rob Humann made 16 saves, including seven in the final quarter to seal the win for Molloy.

For the Purple Knights (0-1, 0-0 NE-10), juniors Kevin Simmons (Ridgewood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), Mark Agostinelli (Dedham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) scored a goal apiece, while freshman Brian DiPisa (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) added he first career point with an assist. Junior Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) made 15 stops in net, including five in the first and third quarters.

After Molloy went up 1-0 in the first quarter, the teams exploded for five goals in the second. The Lions took a 4-0 midway through the period; however, the Purple Knights cut the lead to 4-2 with goals by Bednarz and Agostinelli.

In the third quarter it was all Saint Michael's as they took a 5-4 lead with three goals in the quarter. Bednarz added a man advantage goal, while Simmons tied it up with 5:28 remaining in the quarter. The Purple Knights kept the pressure on and Boerma gave Saint Michael's their first lead of the game with 14 seconds left in the third.

Molloy took the lead back with back-to-back goals in a 15 second span early in the fourth quarter. They added two insurance goals and Bednarz posted his third goal of the game to close out the scoring.

The Purple Knights will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as the face-off against New York Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
