The Game Story:
Westbury, N.Y. - The No. 7 Mercyhurst Lakers men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 9-8 overtime loss Saturday to the No. 3 New York Institute of Technology Bears. Mike Thon, Mike Bartlett and Jordan Witt each added two goals apiece for the Lakers and goalkeeper Jason LaShomb tallied 14 saves. Mercyhurst falls to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears remain undefeated at 11-0 and 5-0 in the conference.

The Bears got onto the board early off of a goal at the 12:38 mark from Paul Flowers. Mercyhurst picked up the pace though as Jordan Witt came off the bench for the Lakers and answered back four minutes later. Feeling the golden touch, Witt fired off another goal two minutes later off of a pass from Mike Bartlett to take the lead for Mercyhurst.

Entering the second period, the Lakers maintained their momentum and Mike Thon dished the ball off to Mike Bartlett to give Mercyhurst a 3-1 advantage that it would hold onto after the first thirty minutes of play. The Lakers outshot the Bears 17-13 in the first half and held a 21-13 advantage in groundballs.

The third period was a scoring barrage by both teams as Mercyhurst scored five goals to the Bears' four. Thon and Bartlett hooked up for the second time in the game less than thirty seconds into the second half to extend the Laker lead to 4-1. Mercyhurst struck again when Tyler Burton scored his ninth goal of the season 46 seconds after Thon. NYIT's Keith Henderson scored his first goal of the game for the Bears at the 11:07 mark but Thon would struck yet again and add his second goal of game just seven seconds later. The Bears would then embark on a 3-2 run to cut down Mercyhurst's lead to three going into the fourth period.

The fourth period was all New York Tech as three different Bears scored goals and held the Lakers scoreless in the period to tie the game up at eight and push the contest into overtime. Austin Carino scored the sudden death goal for the Bears at the 2:53 mark, stealing away the Lakers upset bid.

Mercyhurst was only able to clear 22 of its 37 attempts and NYIT capitalized on the Lakers' hardship with five of its goals. The Bears won 12 of the 20 face-offs and outshot the Lakers 37-31.

Bartlett led the Lakers with two goals and two assists while Thon added two goals and one assist. Witt tallied two goals and Burton and Trevor Rice each finished with one goal. Aaron Manzer and Ryan Arnold also contributed one assist each.

The Mercyhurst Lakers will close out its home season against No.6 Adelphi Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
