The Game Story:
NYIT DEFEATS PACE; IMPROVES TO 11-0

Bears Defense Limits Pace to Six Goals and Shuts Them Out for Two Quarters

Old Westbury, NY: Goalkeeper Matt Hunter (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh HS) registered 18 saves, 11 in the first half as the NYIT Bears defense controlled the Pace University offense on their way to a 13-6 victory. Freshman Tom Zummo (Islip, NY/Islip HS) scored three goals and assisted on another and Frank Lawrence (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point HS) scored twice and assisted on three as the #1 nationally ranked Bears improved to 11-0 on the season. Pace University falls to 7-4 overall.

Pace University controlled the ball for the first 3:36, unleashing seven shots until John Hemsley scored at 11:24 to give Pace a 1-0 lead. Tom Zummo responded for the Bears, taking an assist from Greg Kalberer (Holbrook, NY/Bridgeton Academy) and scoring at 9:43, tying the game 1-1. James Watson put Pace up 2-1 just 13 seconds later at 9:30 with an unassisted goal. Watson scored his second goal of the game at 4:18 to put Pace ahead 3-1. Frank Lawrence scored at 3:47, assisted from Jared Cullin (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown HS) to cut Pace's lead to 3-2. Jeremy Nickol (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point HS) scored the goal of the game, when after making several trips around the crease, he dove between two defenders and put it past the goalkeepers legs at 1:04 to tie it at 3-3. Zummo scored the only goal of the second quarter, his second of the game at 8:49 to give the Bears a 4-3 lead at halftime.

The Bears took a 5-3 lead just 1:58 into the second half when Tim Spruyt (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) scored off of a feed from Zummo. Boyle, the NYCAC Conference's points leader and Paul Montali, the conferences leading goal scorer, scored the next two goals for the Bears with a :35 second span to give NYIT an 8-3 lead with 9:15 remaining in the third.

Charlie Rizutto scored back-to-back goals for Pace at 7:44 and 7:32 of the third quarter to bring Pace within three, 8-5. NYIT responded with two consecutive goals of their own to push the lead back up to five at 10-5. Boyle got his second goal of the game, assisted from Lawrence, at 5:07 of the third with NYIT a man-up and Nickol scored his second goal of the game off of a feed from Joe Gabrysiak with 2:34 remaining in the third.Pace's Liam Scully bounced one into the net with :44 seconds remaining to cut the Bears lead to 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bears defense shut out Pace for the entire fourth quarter while Montali scored his second of the game and Zummo netted his third.

The Bears do not play again until Wednesday, May 1st when they travel to West Chester University for a 3:30 match.
