Pace vs. Mercy

The Game Story:
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Nick Ospina's (Johnson, NY/Minisink Valley) hat trick, including the game-winner with 25 seconds left in the game lifted the Setters to a season-opening 4-3 victory over the Mavericks of Mercy College. Pace opens the season at 1-0, while Mercy falls to 1-1 on the season.

Pace struck first as freshman Thomas Earl (North Babylon, NY/St. Anthony's) netted a goal at the 11:35 mark of the opening period. Mercy would answer with 1:32 left in the first to knot the score at one. The teams would fail to score in the second period and head to halftime tied at one.

Mercy would jump in front early in the third quarter but Ospina would tie the game at two at the 11:23 mark. In the fourth quarter, the Mavericks would take a 3-2 lead with 8:01 left in the game. The Setters would get a fast-break opportunity off a save by Pace netminder Sean Kearney (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac/SUNY Oneonta). Pace's John Thorp (Rockville Centre, NY/Holy Trinity) raced down the field on the break and tossed it to Ospina, who netted the equalizer with 1:50 remaining in the game. The Setters would cap off the come-from-behind victory as Ospina posted an unassisted goal with 25 seconds left in the game to lift Pace to a thrilling 4-3 victory in their season opener.

For Pace, Ospina's three-goal hat trick led all scorers on the day to lead the Setters to victory. Kearney posted seven saves in his Setters' debut, while Mercy goalkeeper T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N Y) recorded 15 saves.
