| GETTYSBURG, P.A. - Pfeiffer University's men's lacrosse team hung with the nation's best team on Saturday afternoon falling 8-6 to #1 Mercyhurst in a neutral site contest played at Gettysburg College. Mercyhurst, the national champions a year ago, improve to 8-0 overall while the Falcons fall to 10-4. Zac Reid and Kyle Kallay started scoring on the day for Mercyhurst and tallied just eight seconds apart for an early 2-0 lead. Before the end of the first, Pfeiffer's Steven Tilmon and James Shepherd had netted equalizers for a 2-2 game after 15 minutes. In the second quarter, Mercyhurst went on a bit of a run scoring the first three goals in the first 8:09 as Brian Scheetz, Brandon Thomson and Mark Saltrelli put the hosts up 5-2. Tucker Hammock got the Falcons within two just 30 seconds later while James Rogan finished off a four-goal quarter for Mercyhurst leading to a 6-3 halftime advantage. Justin Rose began second half scoring for the Falcons before Kallay registered a man-up goal giving Mercyhurst another three goal cushion. An even strength goal by Tilmon and man-up tally by Hammock set up a huge final quarter as Pfeiffer trailed 7-6 going to the fourth. The only fourth quarter goal found the back of the net with 5:20 to play as Jake McAndrew added insurance and the final 8-6 margin for Mercyhurst. Hammock and Tilmon each led Pfeiffer with a pair of goals while Hayden Kirk turned away 14 Mercyhurst shots. Kallay had the only multi-goal game for the nation's number one squad. Pfeiffer returns to action next Saturday taking on Limestone for a first-place showdown in Conference Carolinas. The first Printable Version |
