Pfeiffer vs. Wingate

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) continued his stellar play, scoring three goals and dishing out five assists as the Bulldogs defeated Pfeiffer University 15-9 in a Deep South Conference lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.

Wingate (2-4 overall, 1-0 DSC) returns to conference play Saturday, hosting Lees-McRae College for a 2 p.m. game. Pfeiffer (1-5 overall, 1-2 DSC) steps out of the league Sunday, entertaining Wheeling Jesuit University at 1 p.m.

This week's Deep South Conference "player of the week," Maxwell leads the Bulldogs with 16 goals and 14 assists this season. The Wingate offense was balanced, as five players scored two goals or more.

For the Bulldogs, freshman attack Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored a career-high four goals. Seniors Ian Hill (Rochester, N.Y.) and Drew Penny (Stafford, Va.) added three goals each, while sophomore attack Andy Tyler (Hudson, Ohio) contributed two goals.

Pfeiffer scored four goals in two minutes (spanning the first and second quarter) to take a 5-3 lead on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfield Trevor Krauss at the 14:01 mark of the second quarter. Wingate answered with an 8-2 run, capped by a Safarik goal with 14.5 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Bulldogs led 11-7 at this juncture.

Wingate outscored Pfeiffer 4-0 in the third quarter. Penny had two of his three goals in the third frame. He added an assist in the period.

Krauss led Pfeiffer with three goals. Senior midfield Pete Fountain contributed two goals. Wingate outshot Pfeiffer 38-20.
