| LAURINBURG, N.C. - Catawba College took advantage of a six-goal second
quarter to defeat St. Andrews Presbyterian College 9-8 in a Deep South
Conference men's lacrosse battle Wednesday afternoon.
St. Andrews (2-5, 2-1 in DSC) scored twice before Catawba (5-4, 3-1 in DSC) would get on the board in the first quarter. The Knights held a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first frame, but the Indians would take a 7-4 lead into halftime with Chris Khatri scoring three of Catawba's six goals in the second period. St. Andrews outscored Catawba 3-1 in the third quarter, but the Indians would hold on to an 8-7 lead at the end of the period. SAPC's Ray Gayhardt fired a shot to even the score at the 9:20 mark of the fourth quarter, but Catawba's Matt Riley would score what proved to be the game-winner on a pass from Jason Windett with 6:45 remaining. Zach Myrncza, Chris Stott, Brendon Burke, Pat Fitzgerald, Jimmy Herberson, Pat Haley, and Keith Belward joined Gayhardt in the scoring column with goal apiece. Burke, Herberson, and Sean Jurecic had one assist each. Khatri and Pat Huskins each recorded a hat trick for the Indians. The Knight defense held Josh Maphis to only one goal. Maphis came into the contest averaging 3.13 tallies per game with a conference-high 25 goals. Andy Peterson and Matt Riley also scored for Catawba while Peterson, Riley, and David Dunnuck had singles assists. Kevin Woods made 12 saves for St. Andrews. Frank Fish had 15 saves for Catawba. St. Andrews will continue Deep South action Saturday at Limestone. |
