|The Game Story:|
|LAURINBURG, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse team built a six-goal lead midway through the fourth quarter and survived a furious late rally by visiting Lees-McRae College to win its Conference Carolinas opener 11-9 on Friday afternoon.|
The Knights (1-8 Overall; 1-0 Conference Carolinas) picked up their first win of the season behind three goals by junior Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and two goals by junior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) and freshmen Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.).
Sophomore Kyle Ficken (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had a game-high four goals for the Bobcats (1-4; 0-2).
Lees-McRae grabbed an early 2-0 on goals by Ficken and junior Neil Sleight (Williamsburg, Va.) but St. Andrews answered with a three-goal surge to take their first lead of the day. Sophomore Matt Markey (Burlington, N.C.) scored a late goal in the first quarter to tie the game at 3-3 after 15 minutes.
Ficken tallied the first goal of the second quarter to give the visitors their last lead of the day at 4-3.
St. Andrews went on to out score Lees-McRae 3-1 in both the second and third quarters to take a 9-5 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Knights defense stepped up in the middle periods allowing just two extra-man opportunity (EMO) goals and no even-strength goals during those 30 minutes.
Junior Phil Hardy (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Howell scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to increase the Knights lead to six (11-5) midway through the final frame.
Freshman Ryan LeBlanc (Naples, Fla.) kept the Bobcats in the game late registering a natural hat trick with three consecutive goals in a three minute span. Ficken added his fourth score of the afternoon in the final seconds to pull the final deficit to two but St. Andrews endured the late rally.
Knights’ junior goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, Md.) earned his first win of the season with 15 saves. Bobcats’ senior netminder Adam Canoy (Durham, N.C.) had seven stops.
Lees-McRae out shot St. Andrews, 15-4, in the fourth quarter to finish the game with a 34-28 shot advantage. LMC won 14-of-27 face offs with freshman Pedro Silva (Bluffton, S.C.) winning all 14 for the visitors. Junior Marcus Kirby (Greensboro, N.C.) won nine face offs for St. Andrews.
Howell (3G, 1A) and Lewnes (2G, 2A) led the Knights with four point performances. A trio of freshman had goals for the Royal Blue and White including Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.), Ryan Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md.), and Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.).
Ficken added two assists to his four goals for six points. Sleight and Markey each had one goal and one assist.
